A balance bike lets a young child learn the feel of moving on wheels without pedals getting in the way. Feet stay on the ground, so the child decides how fast to go and when to stop. It is a quiet, outdoor kind of independence: pushing off, gliding a little further each week, and steering by instinct.
How your child plays with it
- Balance — Sitting astride the frame, the child shifts weight and learns to stay upright while moving.
- Leg strength — Pushing off the ground with both feet builds the legs and the confidence to go further.
- Independence — A child can get on, get off and set the pace without an adult holding on.

How to give it the Montessori way
Let your child simply walk the bike at first, sitting or standing astride, on a flat path. Resist holding the handlebars so they can find their own balance and decide when to glide.
